On s’est promis de ne rien se promettre

Mateo Castrogiovanni’s work is instantly recognizable: a purified, almost silent image, a hand captured in motion within the water. Few elements, yet a palpable tension — a powerful minimalism.
The surface of the water becomes a metaphor. Like a wave, it carries a sudden, almost vertiginous intensity, reminiscent of a whispered promise. Yet the wave, by nature, breaks: it exists fully, then vanishes. The title echoes this duality. To promise to promise nothing is to acknowledge both the strength of a bond and its fragility, its brilliance and its fleeting nature.
In the details of the water, in the almost tactile texture of the movement, the image tells an instinctive story — a gesture, a presence, an emotion suspended. Yet, true to his approach, Mateo Castrogiovanni does not seek to impose a narrative. He suggests, he opens, leaving space for the viewer to project their own interpretation. Here, the artist may make no promise — except, quietly, to evoke an emotion.
